We are pleased to share that a new article about North Korean war orphans in Czechoslovakia has been published on Seznam’s Médium.cz, one of the largest Czech online media platforms. The article was prepared in collaboration with our institute and brings attention to a little-known chapter of Cold War history.
The text presents memories of former Czech educators who cared for Korean children placed in Czechoslovakia during the 1950s after the Korean War. At that time, around 900 war-affected Korean children were received in Czechoslovakia, where they lived and studied in children’s homes located in places such as Valeč and Jindřichov.
Through personal recollections, the article highlights the strong emotional bonds that developed between the children and their Czech caregivers—many of the children even addressed them as “mom” and “dad.” These memories offer a human perspective on an important but often overlooked episode of international solidarity during the early Cold War.
The publication contributes to ongoing research on Korean War orphans and the historical connections between Korea and the countries of the former Eastern Bloc.
