Opening of new Korean Studies course at Charles University: Korean War in the Cold War Era Cinematography

We are pleased to announce that a new course is available at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in Prague as part of the project “Korea and the Eastern Bloc: Past, Present, and Future Development.”

The course explores the theme of the Korean War in Cold War cinema from the 1950s onward. It examines the evolution of its portrayal, including films from recent decades. It features excerpts from typical productions of both Koreas, the United States, and the People’s Republic of China, as well as documentaries from Czechoslovakia and a later four-part Soviet documentary to illustrate the Eastern European narrative.
In-person meetings take place every two weeks, with each session focusing on two specific films representing a historical period, the breaking of taboos, ongoing inter-Korean dialogue, etc. Emphasis will be placed on cinematic techniques, distinctive characteristics of settings, protagonists, motifs, and recurring narrative structures. Watching the assigned films is a prerequisite for each session, where discussions will analyze them in broader contexts.

All students of Charles University are free to attend this course!
